A-Z of Puddle Pet Care

B is for Battersea

B is for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Battersea is very close to our hearts here at Puddle Pet Care as this is where we got our first dog Splash from.  We had waited many years to be in a position to get a dog and as we lived in London at the time Battersea was the obvious place to go and look.  Out of all the dogs there we fell for 2 in particular, one after finding out more details wasn’t suitable for us – the other was Splash.  After finding out more about Splash and meeting him we decided he was the one for us and fortunately Battersea felt the same way and so he came to live with us.  Splash had been taken to Battersea at 9 months old when his previous owner became pregnant and decided that she couldn’t cope with a new baby and a young Border Collie.  Unfortunately Splash was resident at Battersea for over 3 months as he developed a bad case of Kennel  Cough and was quite poorly for a number of weeks.

Battersea was founded in 1860 and since then has amazingly rescued, reunited and rehomed over 3.1 million dogs and cats.

To highlight just how much it takes to look after 9,000 hungry mouths, the charity has revealed its 2011 shopping list:

  • 41,708 kg of dry dog food and 1304kg dry cat food (the dog food alone weighs the same as three double decker buses)
  • 44,658 tins of dog food and 58,656 pouches of cat food (that’s more tins and pouches than there are people in Jersey)
  • 101,020 litres of cat litter (enough to fill 1,262 baths)
  • 3,000 dog leads (tied together, these would be over two miles long)
  • 57,600 Schmacko dog treat sticks (enough for everyone in Greenland to have one)
  • 24,864 Dentastix dog chews (it would take 68 years to eat these if you had one a day)
  • 440 metres of Vetbed bedding (which would stretch across Chelsea Bridge twice)
  • 800,000 litres of disinfectant (enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools)

Splash has now lived with us for 13 years and we are very grateful to Battersea for taking care of him while he was with them and for letting him come to live with us.

The A-Z of Puddle Pet Care

Welcome to the A-Z Blog posts about Puddle Pet Care.  This is an idea we shamelessly borrowed from another blog!  The idea is that we write a blog post about things to do with Puddle Pet Care (or our products or product testers) for each letter of the alphabet.  It sounded like fun so here goes.

A is for About Us.

This seemed like a good place to start!  Puddle Pet Care is a family run business which was started in January 2000 after we escaped the “rat race” of London and moved to the sea-side town of Selsey in West Sussex.  Part of the escape was to set up our own business and wanted to do something we had an interest & knowledge about – and what better than pets.  We began with a local delivery service and in January 2001 launched our website and have never looked back.

Along with the humans here we are assisted by (at the moment!) 7 product testers – namely our 4 Border Collie dogs and 3 cats – who you will meet in future posts.

We currently sell products for cats & dogs – and are looking to expand our range this year into products for small animals as well.

Being animal owners & lovers we hope that we have an idea of the type of products people are looking for and we only sell items that we would be happy to use with our own pets.  We are more than happy to try and source products that we don’t currently have listed and are always on the lookout for new products to sell so if you have any ideas we’d love to hear them.

So just a brief introduction about us & as I said you will learn more about Puddle Pet Care in the coming posts!
